Yesterday, some of you may have received information concerning SB 129, Georgia’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Below is an update.
The House Judiciary Chairman Wendell Willard has put together a special sub-committee to hear SB 129. The appearance is that Chairman Willard may be intentionally delaying until Day 35. The committee is equally divided. It has 4 Democrats and 4 Republicans. The majority of these committee members are known to NOT be in support of the bill.
A hearing for SB 129 is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24 at 2:00 pm in the Committee Room 132 at the Capitol. It is important that we have as many people as possible to be present for the hearing on Tuesday. You would need to be preset no later than 12 noon to get a seat.
The Chairman has promised a hearing ONLY. Even if a vote happened, it would still need to go to the full committee for a final vote. We are running out of time for this bill to successfully make it to the 40th day.
It is time to put as much pressure as possible on Speaker David Ralston and Chairman Willard’s office to pass the bill with NO AMENDMENTS. The perception is that this special sub-committee process is window dressing to get away from the pressure. House Leadership would be able to say: “We gave them a hearing and it was a flawed bill. We didn’t have time to fix it so we couldn’t push it to the floor.” There is good reason to believe that this process could be designed as stall tactic and an effort to either water down or kill the bill before it is heard in regular committee.
PRAY: Ask the Lord to move in the heart of Rep. Willard and in the hearts of the sub-committee to vote in favor of this bill. Pray that the believers in Christ will rise up today and make those calls!
CALL: Please call Speaker David Ralston, Chairman Willard’s office and the sub-committee members. Let them know your support for SB 129 with NO AMENDMENTS. Urge them to support this bill and allow it to move to the full committee and eventually to the House floor for a vote.
